Celebrating One Hundred Years of Le Sacre du printemps with
The York Dance Ensemble.
Join us for this celebration of dance, music & spectacle.
The 1913 première of Le Sacre du printemps at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in
Paris was an artistic risk. A ballet performance created collaboratively by some
of the 20th century’s most influential artists: composer Igor Stravinsky (1882-
1971), choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky (1889-1950), designer Nicholas Roerich,
and producer Sergei Diaghilev (1872-1929), Le Sacre du printemps broke
boundaries and is still thriving one hundred years later. It is considered a
ground-breaking, seminal work of art.
Rite Redux pays homage to certain shapes, steps, and objects from Nijinsky’s
original choreography, refreshing it with a uniquely modern point-of-view.
Drawing heavily on aspects of Canadiana, such as the wilderness encountered
by European homesteaders and the iconic paintings by the Group of Seven, the
visual art evokes themes of spirituality similar to those found in the original
production. Stravinsky’s score for the original ballet was revolutionary and for
many, changed how music was heard and composed in the 20th century.
The York Dance Ensemble celebrates 25 years of dancing with Rite Redux.
Choreographed by Professors Carol Anderson, Darcey Callison and Artistic
Director Holly Small, costumes are by designer Julia Tribe, with projections and
lighting by Professor William Mackwood.
Rite Redux offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for your students to view an
original choreography that traces the monumental impact of this game-changing
moment of choreographic and music history.
An on-line Rite Redux study guide will be available on request for those
teachers whose classes attend a performance.
This study guide offers pre-performance and follow-up lesson suggestions
related to the Ontario Arts Curriculum for Dance in grades 7/8, 9/10
(ATC10/ATC20), and 11/12 (ATC3M/ATC4M). Additional background materials
and a resource list will also be included to support the lessons.
