On October 15th, Professor Jonothan Neelands of the University of Warwick presented a workshop based on The Grapes of Wrath for CODE members in Toronto. Participants explored timely issues connected to poverty, the arduous journey the Joad family made in pursuit of a better life, and the power of memory. This practical drama workshop with Jonothan Neelands will explore John Steinbeck's iconic novel The Grapes of Wrath and its contemporary resonances for the troubled world that young people are experiencing.
Using material from the novel and the film and play versions as well as other historical and contemporary materials the workshop offers a model of how teaching literature of the past through drama can connect us powerfully with our world today. The workshop started life as a pre-show and post-show workshop for the current Stratford Festival production and is still evolving as a socio-historical theatrical journey into the lives, experiences and art of those living on the edge then and now.
