Resource - Art Fusion First Five - Opening Scenes

  1. Home
  2. Resources
Abstract:
The purpose of this unit is to launch an intermediate drama program by introducing students to different elements of drama (role/character, relationship, time and place, perspective, and focus) through play-based learning, grounded in relationship-building and community-building. These lessons serve as a “tasting menu” of the different elements of drama, allowing both the teacher and students to develop a level of knowledge and confidence with the drama elements and vocabulary. Students will establish a strong foundation of trust and collaboration through games and community-building exercises. This resource contains a wide variety of drama games, warmups, teambuilders, and collaborative exercises that teachers can return to throughout the school year. We hope that these “First Five” lessons can be a springboard for inspiration in thinking about how teachers can bring curricular learning goals to life in meaningful ways that are accessible to all students and teachers, regardless of experience level.

60 minutes

Lesson 3: Yes, Let’s!

In this lesson, students will learn about the “yes, and” fundamental rule of improvisation and practice giving, receiving, and accepting offers through various improv games.

60 minutes

Lesson 4: The Focus Factor

Building from the previous lesson, students will engage in various activities geared towards promoting greater focus and intentional listening practices. Students will try a challenging improv game that requires careful listening in order to give and receive offers from their scene partners.

60 minutes

Lesson 5: New Character, Who Dis?: Characterization Through Improv
