Lesson - Student Choice

Provide a range of choices based on level of challenge or topic and allow students to choose their groups based on which suits their comfort, skill level or preference.

Generate a list of possible "expert" roles with students and allow them to choose the "expert" that is most interesting to them.

For open-ended tasks or tasks without a prescribed topic (e.g., scene writing), allow students to form groups based on a topic of interest to them. The class may brainstorm topics to choose from together first.

Occasionally, it may be appropriate to allow students to choose their friend group. Remind them of their responbility to ensure everyone is included and to invite students without a group to join them.
