Does the student…

  • Participate in all of the activities to the best of their ability
  • Correctly follow instructions to the best of their ability
  • Take turns when listening and speaking
  • Have strategies for managing attention/self-regulation
  • Move safely within the space
  • Engage respectfully with the ideas shared with the group when engaging in brainstorming or devising tasks
  • Take a leadership role
  • Come to a compromise when competing ideas are on the table
  • Take creative risks
  • Remain focused on the task/topic at hand

Sample strategies to support self-regulation/attention

  • alternative seating to promote concentration/self-regulation -on a chair, next to you, on a mat next to the group
  • strategic seating to ensure that students whose hearing is compromised or who need 1:1 engagement with the teacher when receiving instructions
  • do not require the use of eye contact as a measure of engagement, sitting next to the speaker without speaking over them or fidgeting with a toy as someone speaks without looking at them are both acceptable measures of engagement
  • Have a place in the room designated as a cool down corner for students who are overstimulated, have concentration fatigue, or are struggling to manage their emotions. Determine a signal for students to share with you when they feel they need to use it.
