Students create a program for a live dance performance.

Notes

  • This could be used as a portfolio component to demonstrate understanding of elements of stagecraft and production.
  • If the information is to be used in an actual performance, the teacher may wish to have each group submit one program for each composition electronically and then have the program information compiled into an official performance program.

Learning Goals

  • Apply dance studio roles and responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of safety issues in dance class; character traits needed in dance class; copyrighted music and choreographic work.
  • Use the tools of stagecraft to enhance presentation.

Materials

Minds On (Approximately 15 minutes)

Action! (Approximately 55 minutes)

  • Students meet in their composition groups to brainstorm and compile information to be used in their program.
  • Students use the brainstormed information to create the final product for the assignment individually.
  • The teacher provides ongoing support and suggestions throughout the process.

Consolidation (Approximately 5 minutes)

  • The teacher reviews the expectations and due date for the assignment.

Notes

  • As an extension or enrichment activity, students could produce tickets, create a title/theme for the performance as a whole, and organize the program order and intermission components.
