Students reflect on their own performances and work together with their group members to plan and implement the stagecraft elements of their production.

Learning Goals

  • Describe their development as a dancer using portfolio materials.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of safety issues in dance class; character traits needed in dance class; copyrighted music and choreographic work.
  • Use the tools of stagecraft to enhance presentation.

Materials

Minds On (Approximately 30 minutes)

  • The students review their pieces again, this time with their focus on a critical analysis of their own group’s work.
  • Teacher-led discussion OR written assignment/journal-style entry on the overall success of their pieces regarding the following possible criteria/questions/topics:
    • The parts of the choreography that communicated the intended theme/ideas
    • What were the differences between the choreographers’ intent and the audience’s perception?
    • What, in your opinions, was/were the strongest moment(s) in each piece?
    • What do you feel was/were the weakest moment(s) in each piece?
    • Parts of the piece they would do differently if given the opportunity

Action! (Approximately 40 minutes)

  • The teacher introduces BLM#12 - Portfolio Component Four (Stagecraft) and assigns an appropriate timeline for completion.
  • Students meet with their groups to brainstorm their visions for their pieces on stage before completing the assignment individually at home.

Consolidation (Approximately 5 minutes)

  • The teacher reviews the expectations for both assignments and reminds students of the due dates.

Notes

  • Students and teachers work to actually locate and use the elements of stagecraft for an actual performance for family, peers, parents, and teachers.
