Resource - Art Fusion First Five - Scene & Heard

  1. Home
  2. Resources
Abstract:
This “First Five” unit is designed to establish a foundational, collaborative, and safe learning environment for all levels of senior drama. The following outcomes drive these “First Five” and are aligned with the Curriculum Expectations for all Senior Drama courses in Ontario. We focus specifically on the Creative Process (A1, A2), the Critical Analysis Process (B2, B3), and Responsible Practices (C3). The unit supports facilitators to encourage students to develop ensemble-building skills and responsible practices through a series of games and activities that emphasize trust, risk-taking, and ongoing feedback. By focusing on fundamental skills in movement (A2) and voice (C1), the lessons serve as a diagnostic for facilitators, a review for students experienced in drama, and as a foundational set up for those with little to no experience in drama. This will prepare students to collaboratively design and develop drama works (A1) while maintaining a supportive space for experimentation (A1.2) and personal growth (C3). This “first five” ensures students not only learn technical skills but also develop the interpersonal and ethical foundations necessary for collaborative, respectful, and effective drama creation.

Lesson Overview

Lesson Focus

Anticipated Duration

Lesson 1: Building The Ensemble:
This lesson focuses on establishing a strong, trusting, and supportive ensemble for senior drama students. Through a series of drama games and collaborative activities, students will explore the concepts of safe space, risk-taking, and ensemble building. We begin with active participation, non-verbal communication, and constructive feedback, gradually increasing the level of vulnerability and collaboration required.

5 x 75 Min. Periods

Lesson 2: Movement/Laban Review:
This lesson will quickly refresh students' understanding, or serve as a diagnostic for you. It includes a practical application of movement, basic mime techniques, and The Elements of Dance (Laban Effort Actions) as it pertains specifically to character development. The lesson culminates in a short group movement challenge.

2 x 75 Min. Periods

Lesson 3: Movement Consolidation:
Building off of the learning in lesson 2, this lesson will culminate in a short group movement performance challenge.

1 or 2 x 75 Min. Period(s).

The second period may account for longer performances or for a larger class with more groups.

Lesson 4: Voice and Speech Review:
This lesson will review fundamental voice production techniques, speech articulation, and the expressive manipulation of vocal elements for character and storytelling.  It can also serve as a diagnostic. Students will apply these skills in short individual or group exercises, culminating in a creative vocal performance challenge.

2 x 75 Min. Periods

Lesson 5: Voice and Speech Consolidation:
Using lessons 2-4 as a launch pad, this lesson will support students in applying their movement and voice skills in a short small group or individual voice and speech performance challenge.

1 or 2 x 75 Min. Period(s).

The second period may account for longer performances or for a larger class with more groups.

Teacher Note on Timing
  • Many of the suggestions for length of time (in 75 min. periods) can be adjusted to accommodate for local scheduling.
  • Additionally one can adjust, or omit consolidation suggestions if time for the Action on a given day takes longer than expected.
  • A lesson intended for one period could be accomplished in two, or three.
  • During workshop time, technical rehearsal time, and dress rehearsal time lessons may be extended to allow for more time to rehearse scenes.
