With your group, create a two-motif movement piece that explores barriers and liberation and the ways they are intertwined. Use your background knowledge and creativity to create expressive movements to communicate your story and the transformation.
Choose a barrier (physical, emotional, societal, etc.) that your group wants to explore:
- an unmet access need
- an oppressive pressure
The movement for this motif communicates a struggle, limitation or feeling of being stuck. Pay close attention to Laban’s Effort Actions when expressing this feeling or limitation through your bodies and choices.
Develop a contrasting motif that shows liberation. Use your movements to represent:
- Connection
- Claiming wholeness
- Freedom
- Empowerment
- Celebration
- Relief
Liberation is not linear and it is not an easy response to a barrier or unmet access needs. Consider the ways that your group can use the choreographic patterns you’ve learned about to represent the continuous flow between oppressive pressures, unmet access needs, feelings, and liberation.
The performance needs to include:
- Two clear contrasting motifs
- A clear theme/barrier
- A movement phrase that is 1-3 minutes in length
- An obvious use of choreographic patterns to explore both motifs in different ways
- Use of the elements of dance (especially relationship), Laban’s effort Actions
- Evidence of group collaboration
