Working individually, with a partner, or in a small group (3 or 4), create a short movement phrase (approximately 1 minute) that expresses a personal community memory or story. Your movement piece should tell a story using original movement vocabulary. This is your opportunity to express something meaningful through dance!
Your dance phrase should be thoughtful and authentic. Avoid stereotypes.
- Your moves need to be original. Do not copy from other cultural traditions unless it is your own culture.
- Be aware of the elements of dance.
- Include a moment of stillness to create tension/emphasize meaning
- Include one choreographic form in the movement piece
- Choose music that reflects the tone and emotions you are portraying in your story
- If working with others, make sure to have an equal contribution to the creation of the phrase
Be prepared to write a reflection based on your stories in your dance journal upon the completion of presentations.
