Warming up the body is vital to any dance to ensure that the body is best prepared to move and prevent injury. In this assignment, you and your partner will be responsible for effectively warming up the class. You will move through the foundations of an effective warm-up, applying your knowledge and connecting your movement to anatomy, awareness and purpose.
*It’s important to note that whether you are the first pair or the last pair to present, information is important. Even if it was delivered by another classmate, you can repeat your knowledge. Repetition is key. The more we hear it, the more we remember. ALSO, it is ok to include and omit movements that others have done, just ensure to fully warm up your bodies. Form is important to injury prevention. If you are unsure about a movement, ask before including it.
Purpose:
What do dancers need to be prepared to move?
In this warm-up, you will:
- Include all phases of a warm-up - breathing (connecting our breath), joint (mobilization), muscle (dynamic stretching), core (activation and strengthening), flow (low impact across the floor)
- Demonstrate progressive movements
- Use correct anatomical terminology
- Explain the purpose
- Clear verbal cues to maintain a smooth and logical flow
There should be equal contribution from both partners. This warm-up should be 8-10 minutes in length. It is advised that you practice for flow and clarity. Music is your choice, should you choose to use it.
