Lesson 1: Building The Ensemble
This lesson focuses on establishing a strong, trusting, and supportive ensemble for senior drama students. Through a series of drama games and collaborative activities, students will explore the concepts of safe space, risk-taking, and ensemble building. We begin with active participation, non-verbal communication, and constructive feedback, gradually increasing the level of vulnerability and collaboration required.

5 x 75 Min. Periods

Lesson 2: Movement/Laban Review: 
This lesson will quickly refresh students' understanding, or serve as a diagnostic for you. It includes a practical application of movement, basic mime techniques, and The Elements of Dance (Laban Effort Actions) as it pertains specifically to character development. The lesson culminates in a short group movement challenge.

2 x 75 Min. Periods

Lesson 3: Movement Consolidation
Building off of the learning in lesson 2, this lesson will culminate in a short group movement performance challenge.

1 or 2 x 75 Min. Period(s).

The second period may account for longer performances or for a larger class with more groups.

Lesson 4: Voice and Speech Review
This lesson will review fundamental voice production techniques, speech articulation, and the expressive manipulation of vocal elements for character and storytelling.  It can also serve as a diagnostic. Students will apply these skills in short individual or group exercises, culminating in a creative vocal performance challenge.

2 x 75 Min. Periods

Lesson 5: Voice and Speech Consolidation: 
Using lessons 2-4 as a launch pad, this lesson will support students in applying their movement and voice skills in a short small group or individual voice and speech performance challenge.

1 or 2 x 75 Min. Period(s).

The second period may account for longer performances or for a larger class with more groups.

Teacher Note on Timing
  • Many of the suggestions for length of time (in 75 min. periods) can be adjusted to accommodate for local scheduling.
  • Additionally one can adjust, or omit consolidation suggestions if time for the Action on a given day takes longer than expected.
  • A lesson intended for one period could be accomplished in two, or three.
  • During workshop time, technical rehearsal time, and dress rehearsal time lessons may be extended to allow for more time to rehearse scenes.
