Abstract:
This “First Five” unit is designed to establish a foundational, collaborative, and safe learning environment for all levels of senior drama. The following outcomes drive these “First Five” and are aligned with the Curriculum Expectations for all Senior Drama courses in Ontario. We focus specifically on the Creative Process (A1, A2), the Critical Analysis Process (B2, B3), and Responsible Practices (C3). The unit supports facilitators to encourage students to develop ensemble-building skills and responsible practices through a series of games and activities that emphasize trust, risk-taking, and ongoing feedback. By focusing on fundamental skills in movement (A2) and voice (C1), the lessons serve as a diagnostic for facilitators, a review for students experienced in drama, and as a foundational set up for those with little to no experience in drama. This will prepare students to collaboratively design and develop drama works (A1) while maintaining a supportive space for experimentation (A1.2) and personal growth (C3). This “first five” ensures students not only learn technical skills but also develop the interpersonal and ethical foundations necessary for collaborative, respectful, and effective drama creation.
